UDAN: A First of Its Kind, Globally Unique Scheme

Air transportation in India has grown significantly over the last two decades. However, the growth
has been largely concentrated on select routes and sectors. As a result, parts of the country are
devoid of market-generated supply of Air Services. Fostering air connectivity and developing the
regional aviation market could enhance economic development, nurture a networked economy as
regional passengers move to the national aviation market and contribute to a more equitable growth
in economic activity across the country. Such services not only enhance the quality of life, but also
make businesses and trade more efficient, increase employment opportunities, unlock India’s
tourism potential, enable fast medical services in remote areas and benefit the country as a whole.
In view of the above, the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) - UDAN (Ude Deshka Aam
Nagrik) was conceptualized by the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) with the objective of
enhancing regional connectivity in an economically sustainable and affordable (for passengers)
manner.
